My good lady Jane use to have a Smart car and although it was the biggest money pit in the world. Yes, this budget 2 seater rear engined rear wheel drive car was an economy car it had 2 engine rebuilds and then a new engine and then showed signs the turbo was on its way out so we decided to get rid of it. Horrible car!
However when we were looking at the smart car it was one of the very few cars on the market that has cheap road tax and the crash tests looked like it would be ok.
