What to expect when you own a kit car!
I have owned my kit car for about nine years now, and it has been a roller coaster road but a fantastic journey it has been!
I have traveled across Europe in my buggy, and although it was great fun, it did not go without a mishap we had a few breakdowns but nothing too bad to worry about!
You must remember that a kit car is a money pit, there is always something that needs doing or even improving, which is all part of owning a kit car. I have fitted three engines and two wiring looms to mine just to “improve” it!
People look at you differently when you drive a kit car, people like to stop and point, and if you don’t like being the center of attention then maybe a kit car is not for you, however, I love it!
The other aspect of owning a kit car is the social aspect. I own the Owner’s club for my specific type of kit car and every year we will meet at the big kit car shows a few times a year, and then we will also organise a tour of somewhere looking for superb roads and fantastic views. I have many truly great friends in the kit car industry!
The other thing I have found is that you need to pay great attention to your partner, I have to buy her gifts throughout the summer and take her out for dinner, so she does not get too mad at me when I spend hours in the garage or spend all weekend at a show.
However, if you have a good wife or girlfriend, then this will make things a lot easier and when you need that new exhaust system, you won’t have to hide it from them when the postman delivers it… yes I have had to do that in the past!
All in all, the experience of owning a kit car is a good one, and you will learn that in spite of when you graze your knuckles and stub your toe when you are behind the wheel in the country you won’t even realise blood dripping from your hands!
It’s well worth the hassle.
